Visit of the Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Paweł Jabłoński to Israel
06.06.2023
The visit, from June 4th to June 6th, involved various meetings and activities aimed at strengthening economic, cultural, and educational cooperation.
One of the key events during the visit was the Polish-Israeli political consultations held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel with Director General Ronen Levi and Political Director Aliza Bin Nun. At the Ministry, Polish delegation, along with Director General Ronen Levi, paid tribute to Konstanty Rokicki, a heroic Polish diplomat, member of the Ładoś Group (also known as the Bernese Group), who used his position as consul in Bern, Switzerland, to rescue Jews from the Holocaust. In 2019, Rokicki was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations, and his name was added to the memorial at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel, which honors several dozen Righteous diplomats.
Security concerns, both regional and global, were one of the main topic of discussions during the visit. Minister Jabłoński held meetings with Tzachi Hanegbi, the National Security Council Director from the Prime Minister's Office, and Amit Halevi, the Chairman of the Polish-Israeli Friendship Group in Knesset. These discussions revolved around security issues in Israel and worldwide, with a particular focus on the regional and global aspects of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The delegation had the opportunity to visit Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, where they explored the permanent and temporary exhibitions. A significant part of their visit was dedicated to the Garden of the Righteous Among the Nations, which commemorates the bravery of individuals who risked their lives to save Jewish people. Among these heroes were thousands of Poles.
Another priority of Polish foreign policy is the situation of Christians in Jerusalem and the preservation of religious and cultural heritage in the Holy Land. Minister Jabłoński's meeting with Theophilos III, the Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church, facilitated discussions on the challenges faced by Christian communities and the potential for increased involvement by Polish diplomacy in addressing these issues.
The delegation also met with representatives from the Polish Institute of National Remembrance and together visited Mount Zion, where they paid homage to Poles resting in the Catholic Cemetery. Many of them were Polish civilian war refugees and soldiers from General Anders' Polish II Corps, who lost their lives during World War II and after. This visit served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Poles in the pursuit of freedom and their journey back to their homeland.
The visit concluded with the ceremonial opening of the exhibition titled "Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom" at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center.
