UNGEGN conferences
The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) meets regularly at meetings, during which activities related to the standardization of geographical names are discussed. In the years 1967-2017, these meetings were held as conferences organized every 5 years and as sessions held between conferences (and short, technical ones during conferences).
In 2017, the UNGEGN reform took place, and as a result, the schedule of meetings was changed – now the UNGEGN meets every two years during sessions which are a combination of old conferences and sessions. The first session in this new mode took place in 2019 (New York) and the second in 2021 (on-line session).
Conferences (1967-2017)
United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names took place every 5 years on the basis of decisions taken by the UN Economic and Social Council. The conferences have adopted resolutions in the form of recommendations to the Council and UN member states.
