Diplomatic relations between Poland and Kingdom of Tonga were established on 29 August 2016.

Historical view
The Polish presence on Tongan islands goes far back in history - with Capitan James Cook, who visited the Tongan archipelago twice during his second journey in 1773-1775. He was accompanied by two Polish-born scientists John and George Forsters.
In 1939, after the German invasion of Poland, the Kingdom of Tonga was among the first to declare war against Germany. Subsequently, as a result of a public campaign the people of Tonga funded two Spitfire fighter aircrafts. At that time the Kingdom was ruled by Queen Sālote Tupou III.
Political cooperation after 1989
On 3 November 2015, Poland's Ambassador to New Zealand Zbigniew Gniatkowski paid his first visit to Tonga. He met with the Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva to discuss global issues and future bilateral cooperation. Ambassador Gniatkowski was also invited by the Dean of 'Atenisi Institute PhD Michael Horowitz to meet with the academic community in Nuku’alofa.
On 29 August 2016, at the premises of the Permanent Mission of Poland to the United Nations in New York representatives of Poland and Tonga signed a Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Poland and the Kingdom of Tonga.
The official Tongan delegation participated in the 24th World Climate Conference under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP24 in Katowice, Poland in December 2018.
On 27 September 2021 Poland's Ambassador to New Zealand Grzegorz Kowal presented the Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Tupou VI becoming the second Ambassador of Poland to Tonga. Due to corona virus pandemic and travelling restriction the ceremony took place virtually.
