27.04.2022

The Israeli Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Memorial Day, commemorating Jews who died in the Holocaust at the hands of Nazi Germany and their collaborators, was celebrated on April 27, 2022 in the presence of the New Zealand Jewish community and distinguished guests. The Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Grzegorz Kowal took part in the Wellington celebrations.

The theme of this year's celebration was Lost Communities. Speakers inluded those of North African, Greek and Italian Jewish descent, whose voices and culture were almost eradicated by the Nazis and their collaborators.

Six symbolic candles commemorating about six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust were solemnly lit. During the ceremony, excerpts of personal testimonies written by the survivors of the Holocaust were read out.
