On November 10, 2021, at St Mary of the Angels in Wellington, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland commemorated the victims of the Katyn Massacre by laying flowers at the Katyn Plaque. The flowers were also laid by the President of the Ex-Servicemen Association in New Zealand, Marian Ceregra.

Fr. Joe Savesi from the parish of St Mary of the Angels said a prayer for the fallen in Katyn and for the entire Polish community in New Zealand and blessed the plaque.

Katyń Massacre took place in April 1940. It was a mass execution of almost 22,000 people - Polish prisoners of war in Katyń, Kharkov, Kalinin (Tver) and also other Polish prisoners (soldiers and civilians) in different places of the Soviet Ukraine and Belarus republics based on the decision of the Soviet authorities.

Commemorating the victims of Katyn took place in connection with the All Saints' Day celebrated a few days ago and in the light of the upcoming Poland's Independence Day.
