Obchody w Pahiatua

During the Independence Day and Armistice Day celebrations in Pahiatua, on November 11, the  children from the local primary school sang the National Anthem of Poland in Polish.

During the speech, both the Mayor of Tararua County Tracey Collis and Ambassdor Grzegorz Kowal emphasized that Pahiatua is an important place for the history of Polish-New Zealand relations - it was a place of the camp for Polish orphans, exiles from Siberia, invited and welcomed by New Zealand in 1944. The vast majority of the 733 children never returned to Poland and became part of New Zealand society, lived to see grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Appreciation and gratitude for the effort put by the locals were visible among those attending the event.
