Siberia Memory Run in Christchurch
11.02.2024
The Christchurch branch of the Association of Polish Ex-Servicemen organized the Siberia Memory Run, which is part of the annual initiative of the Siberia Memorial Museum in Białystok.
On February 11, 2024, SPK members, Polish families and descendants of the Children of Pahiatua met in Groynes Park to commemorate the victims of Soviet deportations to Siberia in 1940-1941. Participants celebrated the 84th anniversary of the first of four mass deportations carried out by the Soviet authorities, during which hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens were deported to Siberia.
Among them were also the families of Polish Children from Pahiatua. The so-called Siberian orphans arrived in New Zealand on November 1, 1944. This year will be the 80th anniversary of this event.
