How to Survive a Heatwave
A heatwave is defined as weather when the ground-level air temperature exceeds 30°C. During the day, the highest temperature typically occurs between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., not at noon as commonly believed, while the peak UV radiation is recorded between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.
Effects:
As temperatures rise, so does the risk of dehydration and overheating. Heat can lead to sunstroke or heatstroke, both of which are potentially life-threatening conditions. Symptoms include:
- Fatigue,
- Severe headaches and dizziness,
- Nausea,
- Fever,
- Ringing in the ears,
- Convulsions,
- Life-threatening body temperature increase,
- Accelerated heart rate and breathing.
Heat also affects the nervous system, potentially causing drowsiness, irritability, and reducing concentration and work efficiency. The elderly and children are particularly vulnerable to heat. Pets also need care, as they can overheat as well.
