The head of the Ministry of Agriculture participated in the discussion panel entitled “Food security and the war in Ukraine. Are we at risk of hunger?”, which was held within the framework of the Economic Forum in Karpacz. Mr. Mykola Solskyi, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, and Mr. Iulian Chifu, the Adviser on Security and Strategic Affairs of the Prime Minister of Romania, also took part in the discussion.

About the transport of Ukrainian cereals at the Economic Forum in Karpacz

The Deputy Prime Minister assured that Poland was taking many actions all the time to resolve the problems related to the transport of Ukrainian cereals through Poland. In addition, he pointed out that, apart from the declarations of the European Union and the US President, nothing had changed in this matter. There is no technical support which would enable the throughput capacity to be increased at the Polish-Ukrainian border. The technical transloading capacity is limited and Poland is unable to increase the throughput capacity at the border crossings.

“About one million tonnes of cereals have crossed our border, but this is not a quantity which would satisfy everyone,” the head of the Ministry of Agriculture admitted.

The problem of hunger

„I am very concerned about the issue of hunger in the world,” Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk said.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that the absence of solidarity corridors and technical support at our border crossings with Ukraine, the drought in Southern Europe, as well as the problems with cereals in India and the uncertain situation in Ukraine required the building of alternative routes for the transport of cereals from Ukraine which would be independent from Russia.

“Failure to appreciate the problem of hunger can result in a possible migration wave,” Mr. Henryk Kowalczyk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, stressed.

Apart from energy security or economic growth, the issue of food security is one of the most important topics addressed at the Economic Forum in Karpacz.
