Continuation of the cooperation among the frontline states
05.05.2023
Today, the Agriculture Ministers of five frontline states: Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary, held an online meeting. This was the first meeting of this group of countries after the entry into force of the Commission Implementing Regulation introducing special measures concerning Ukrainian agricultural products.
Today’s talks were held on the initiative of Mr. Robert Telus, the Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Minister was accompanied by Undersecretary of State Krzysztof Ciecióra.
“We will continue our cooperation within the framework of our informal coalition and we will jointly request the European Commission to increase the assistance for farmers in light of the situation which has emerged on the markets due to the imports of Ukrainian agricultural products,” Minister Robert Telus assured and added that the request would concern the allocation of resources from the general budget of the European Union, since the resources of the CAP crisis reserve had already been exhausted.
During a press briefing after the meeting of the five states, Minister Robert Telus informed that Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary would jointly request the European Commission to extend the validity period of the Regulation which was to be in effect until 5 June 2023 and concerned preventive measures on imports of wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seed from Ukraine.
“Poland will continue to fully monitor these products, control them on the border and control their transit. We will continue to escort transports and we will make sure that they are shipped from Poland,” the head of the Polish Ministry of Agriculture assured.
The Minister noted that Poland would also watch the imports of other products from Ukraine, including, among others, flour, poultry meat, eggs, apple juice and soft fruits in order to be able to quickly respond to collapses on these markets.
“We will fully monitor them. This was said today during the meeting of the crisis team convened by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. We would like to know where these products come from and where they are unloaded so that we have the full picture of the situation,” Minister Robert Telus noted.
