Meeting with the President of the Senate of Romania

On behalf of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk today received the President of the Senate of Romania, Florin-Vasile Cîțu, who was accompanied by the Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Poland, Cosmin Onisii.

Main topics of the meeting

The talks concerned the prospects for Polish-Romanian cooperation in the current international situation related to Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The need to ensure food security in Europe and the world was also discussed.

Deputy Prime Minister Kowalczyk and President Cîțu emphasised the importance of the strategic partnership between Poland and Romania, which takes on exceptional significance during the war in Ukraine. They expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people, the need to comprehensively support Ukraine and to stop war crimes committed by Russian soldiers. They stressed the importance of a common voice of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in key issues at the European Union forum.

Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk pointed to the difficult situation in agricultural markets resulting from rising energy, fuel and fertiliser prices and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He informed about the activities of the Polish authorities to improve and accelerate the transit of Ukrainian agricultural and food goods.

Areas of interest for the Romanian side

The Romanian side was interested in discussing Poland's success in exporting agri-food products and in developing rural areas. Deputy Prime Minister Kowalczyk highlighted the potential of Polish agri-food processing and the importance of funds from Pillar II of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Readiness for joint action

Deputy Prime Minister Kowalczyk and President Cîțu expressed readiness for further joint activities to restore peace in Europe, support Ukraine and ensure food security.
