Polish-American talks
16.05.2022
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Henryk Kowalczyk today hosted United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. It was the first visit to Poland by a US agriculture minister in 16 years.
Topics of discussion
The ministers discussed the most important issues in bilateral relations in agriculture. Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk highlighted the fact that American importers and consumers highly appreciate Polish food. He also expressed our expectation that the American authorities will decide to open the possibility of exporting Polish apples to that market.
– All procedures necessary to open US market were completed in 2017. However, the issue, despite being raised in many PL-US and EU-US cooperation forums, has still not found a final solution in the form of the possibility to start exporting these products from Poland, Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk said.
The meeting also served to exchange opinions on the impact of the war in Ukraine on the global agricultural situation.
– Russian aggression has blocked Ukrainian ports with the help of which Ukraine exported, among others, grain and vegetable oils. Russia's invasion against Ukraine poses a real threat to food security and the stability of supply chains around the world, noted Henryk Kowalczyk.
Food security
The ministers discussed ways of ensuring food security in a situation of war in Ukraine and avoiding food shortages in countries dependent on imports from that state. Much space was devoted to the possibilities of unblocking transport routes for Ukrainian agricultural goods and to the assistance provided to Ukraine by Poland and the USA.
The USA is one of the most important Polish partners in the agri-food sector. Polish agri-food exports to the US market in 2021 reached USD 725.3 million (in 2020 it was USD 612.1 million). In 2021 the USA took the leading position in terms of Polish pork exports (in 2020 it was the third place, after the Czech Republic and Slovakia).
