Challenges for Poland's agricultural sector in the current geopolitical situation, including relations with foreign partners, were the topic of yesterday's meeting between Secretary of State Janusz Kowalski and U.S. Congress’ staffers, recipients of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Congressional Fellowship Program.
Poland's support for Ukraine
During the conversation, Deputy Minister Janusz Kowalski highlighted the scale of Polish support for the Ukrainian side. The deputy minister also outlined the measures taken by the Polish government and other frontline countries on the movement of agricultural goods from Ukraine.
Position on the extension of the import ban
The deputy head of the Polish Ministry of Agriculture presented the position of the so-called "five" on the legitimacy of extending the ban on imports from Ukraine of selected agricultural goods in effect until September 15, 2023.
The extension of the EU import ban until the end of 2023 is crucial for strengthening the smooth transit flows of Ukrainian goods through our country and is beneficial for all parties. It is also important for avoiding destabilization of the markets of countries bordering Ukraine, including Poland," Deputy Minister Kowalski stressed.
Potential for cooperation with the US in the area of agriculture
The United States is one of Poland's most important partners in the agricultural sector. Exports of agri-food goods from Poland to the U.S. market amounted to €770 million in 2022. We mainly sell Polish chocolate and products containing cocoa, pork meat and fish fillets and fish preparations to the US market.
