01.03.2024

Today, the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania Kęstutis Navickas and Minister Czesław Siekierski talked about the situation in the agricultural sector. After a bilateral online meeting, they agreed on a joint statement. The Ministers confirmed therein that Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine had resulted in increased flows of goods and created new challenges for the official food and feed control authorities in Poland and Lithuania.

Other issues included in the joint statement of the Ministers of Agriculture of Poland and Lithuania.

  • The Ministers noted a wide range of impacts on the situation of farmers in Poland and expressed their concern about the announced plans of Polish farmers as regards blocking the Budzisko-Kalvarija border crossing with Lithuania from 1 March 2024.
  • The Minister of Agriculture of Lithuania stressed that the inspections carried out at the border with Lithuania did not confirm that Ukrainian grain would go to the Polish market after customs clearance in Lithuania.
  • The Ministers acknowledged that the joint responsibility of both parties was to ensure the free movement of goods between the two neighbouring EU countries. They stressed the importance of the Budzisko-Kalvarija border crossing as the only point through which all kinds of cargo were transported not only from/to Lithuania, but also Latvia and Estonia. Every day, about 6,600 freight cars go through this point.
  • They expressed understanding for the Polish farmers and committed to strengthening mutual institutional efforts so as to clarify and timely report any violations of fair trade practices. They committed themselves to continue further inter-institutional coordination and cooperation between the competent Lithuanian and Polish authorities in order to clarify transit routes and flows of Ukrainian grain intended for Lithuania and transported via Poland.
  • They called upon the Polish farmers to refrain from taking active measures blocking border crossings and to allow the government institutions of both countries to complete the investigation regarding trade flows of grain between Lithuania and Poland.
