The meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council
11.12.2023
On 11 December, the meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers began in Brussels. In the Sunday session, Poland was represented by Secretary of State Janusz Kowalski.
Deputy Minister Janusz Kowalski stressed that the fisheries sector struggled with large challenges, among others, those caused by decreasing marine resources and the consequences of the recent COVID-19 pandemic and that at present it also had to cope with the impacts of the war waged across our border.
The Secretary of State also noted the need to start at the EU level a discussion on an amendment to the EEL Regulation and on the establishment in it of effective protective measures which could enable more efficient management of this species and, at the same time, would have a lesser impact on the economic condition of small-scale coastal fishing.
On the sidelines of the Council meeting, Deputy Minister Janusz Kowalski talked with Mr. Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner for Environment, Fisheries and Oceans, and called for support at the EU level for farmers and transporter operators in Poland who had been affected by the impacts of the war in Ukraine.
Today, Secretary of State Lech Antoni Kołakowski is participating in the meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council.
