09.08.2022
Today Mr. Ryszard Bartosik, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, met with Mrs. Mervat Mojali, Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen in Poland. During the meeting which had been initiated by Yemen, the prospects for the cooperation between Poland and Yemen in the field of agriculture were discussed, among others, in the context of the armed conflict in Ukraine and the disruption of food supply chains.
During the meeting Deputy Minister Ryszard Bartosik presented the actions which Poland had taken since the outbreak of the war to enable the exports of cereals from Ukraine to third countries. The representatives of Yemen and Poland presented their proposals and positions on the development of the cooperation between the countries in the field of agriculture.
The proposals of Yemen
Ambassador Mervat Mojali informed about the most prospective areas of the cooperation with Poland in the field of agriculture. She stressed that Yemen would like to draw on the Polish experiences and the Polish scientific and technological achievements, especially in the scope of agricultural advisory services, the construction of silos or fish farming. Yemen is also interested in the purchase of agricultural machinery and fertilisers. In addition, Ambassador Mojali asked for a list of the producers and exporters of apples and apple preserves.
The position of Poland
The Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed the interest in the strengthening of the relations in the areas of agriculture and the trade in agri-food products with Yemen. He also pointed out the elimination of barriers to the access of Polish products to the Yemeni market as one of the most important factors determining the development of the bilateral trade.
Polish exports to Yemen
In 2021, Poland exported to Yemen agri-food products with a value of nearly EUR 14 million. The main exports included malt extract, fine bakery wares, whey, tobacco, condensed milk and cream. In the first five months of 2022, the exports to Yemen fell by 52% compared with the analogous period of the previous year, reaching a level of EUR 4 million. The commodity structure of Polish exports remained the same.
