With Denmark about the cooperation to develop agricultural biogas plants
22.06.2023
During today’s talks of Secretary of State Janusz Kowalski with Mr. Ole Toft, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Poland, Poland and Denmark declared their readiness to engage in intensive cooperation to develop agricultural biogas plants.
Common interests
The countries expressed their willingness to pursue a dialogue at EU level with a view to simplifying the regulations on the use of biomass to produce energy from renewable sources.
The position of Poland
Secretary of State Janusz Kowalski stressed that Poland had a large potential to produce agricultural biogas and biomethane, particularly using side and waste products from agricultural production and agri-food processing.
The Deputy Minister noted that Poland saw the need to develop the biomethane market on the basis of waste biomass from agriculture. Therefore, the development of gas networks is needed to enable the connection of new biomethane production units. The biomethane produced in the EU can make an important contribution to its independence from gas imports.
The Act on Agricultural Biogas Plants
In order to accelerate the development of agricultural biogas plants in Poland, a draft Act on the Measures to Facilitate and Implement Investments in Agricultural Biogas Plants, as well as on their Operation was drawn up at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Act was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic of Poland on 26 May 2023. Its detailed solutions include:
- the measures to facilitate the investment process;
- the measures to facilitate the use of the local substrate potential and the arising digestate as fertiliser;
- the definition of the rules for the operation of the biocomponents market in Poland.
Prospects of the Polish-Danish cooperation
Poland and Denmark expressed their readiness to cooperate, share their experiences and exchange their biogas-related good practices, in light of the importance of agricultural sectors in our countries and their consistent position on the significance and use of biomethane as an alternative to natural gas.
