War is not only a violation of international law. It is, above all, human tragedy. Due to the fact that the Russian invasion affects geopolitics and security in our region, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki continues to take diplomatic actions on many levels. All these actions have one thing in common - the desire to provide the widest and most effective support to Ukraine. The Russian aggression, actions of the international community and a summary of the meeting in Kyiv with President Volodymyr Zelensky were the main issues discussed by the Polish Prime Minister and his Georgian counterpart Irakli Garibashvili in Batumi. During the visit, a monument to the late President Lech Kaczyński, who supported Georgia during the Russian invasion in 2008, was unveiled.
Severe packages of sanctions against Russia
In view of the ongoing aggression against Ukraine, which includes increasing attacks on civilian facilities, shelling of civilians during evacuation and fighting near nuclear power plants, Poland advocates for the expansion of sanctions against Russia. ‘We are at the forefront of constructing new, far-reaching sanctions that should be more and more severe,’ said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia.
He stressed that we must make every effort to counter Russia's aggressive policy, among other things, by adopting and strictly enforcing a package of sanctions. ‘With each day of the war, they should be more and more severe,’ continued the Prime Minister.
The head of the Polish government discussed Georgia's participation in the implementation of the broad package of sanctions imposed on Russia.
Poland supports Georgia’s aspirations to join the European Community
The Prime Ministers also discussed challenges related to Georgia's aspirations, in particular recently submitted application for membership to the European Union. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that Poland supports Georgia's path towards the European Community. ‘Georgia's place is in Europe,’ he said. The Polish Prime Minister also expressed support for Georgia with regard to a very difficult political and economic situation which is a result of the Russian aggression against Georgia. As much as 20% of its territory is occupied by Russia.
Poland also supports Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations and its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
Support provided to Georgia during the Russian invasion in 2008
A monument to the late President Lech Kaczyński, who supported Georgia during the Russian invasion in 2008, was unveiled in the presence of the Prime Ministers of Poland and Georgia.
The Polish Prime Minister recalled the words of the then President, who flew to Georgia when it was attacked by Russia to show support.
During the speech given in Tbilisi in 2008, the late President Lech Kaczyński said in the context of Russia’s actions: ‘Today, it is Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after tomorrow the Baltic countries, and then perhaps the time will come for Poland’. ‘Those words turned out to be prophetic, and we must take this warning deeply to heart as it is coming true before our very eyes,’ concluded Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
