Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: Baltic Pipe will give us independence from Russia
12.03.2022
The government is finalising activities related to ensuring Poland's gas independence. The Baltic Pipe gas pipeline will be completed later this year. It will enable – for the first time in history – the transmission of gas directly from deposits located in Norway to Danish and Polish markets, as well as to customers in the neighbouring countries of Central and Eastern Europe. We are also expanding the existing gas transmission system in Poland. Today, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the natural gas compressor station in Goleniów, which is a part of the gas pipeline.
The head of the government emphasised that the Baltic Pipe is a strategic investment that goes against Russian interests. "We are witnessing a great work, a consistent implementation of the gas pipeline that will give us independence," said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. "Despite ridicule, mockery and irony, we have been implementing our plan for independence from Russia, which we are presently finishing," he added.
Baltic Pipe
The Baltic Pipe is a strategic infrastructure project aimed at creating a new gas supply corridor on the European market. It will enable, for the first time in history, the transmission of gas directly from deposits located in Norway to Danish and Polish markets, as well as to customers in neighbouring countries of Central and Eastern Europe. At the same time, the Baltic Pipe will allow for the so-called two-way transmission, i.e. it will also be able to supply gas from Poland to Denmark.
The launch of gas transport to Poland is planned for 1 October 2022. The initial capacity of the Baltic Pipe will be approx. 2-3 billion m3 per annum. Meanwhile the full capacity, namely 10 billion m3 per annum, will be achieved from the beginning of 2023.
The investment starts from the North Sea, where it will be connected to the Europipe II gas pipeline, thus providing access to gas from Norwegian deposits. Then, via the infrastructure built on the territory of Denmark and on the bed of the Baltic Sea, the gas pipeline will connect with the Polish transmission system.
Expansion of the Goleniów gas compressor station
The investment involves the expansion of the existing gas compressor station in Goleniów, including the expansion of the transmission node, as well as the connection of these elements with the existing transmission infrastructure.
The expanded compressor station in Goleniów will be responsible for sending to customers increased quantities of gas from the Baltic Pipe and the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście. The investment is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
