Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke to the CEO of Google about ensuring online security
28.02.2022
Modern warfare does not only take place in reality, in Ukraine. Each and every one of us can experience the harmful activities taking place online - the information warfare. This is one area of the daily battle that is being waged not only by our Ukrainian neighbours.
In recent days we have seen gigantic Russian disinformation activity. The dissemination of false information not only serves Russian interests, but can also endanger health and life. It also serves to destabilise countries that are providing assistance to Ukraine.
Prime Ministers against disinformation
The head of the Polish government raised the issue of disinformation and disabling channels that are responsible for carrying out such harmful activities. He appealed to the CEO of Google to act quickly and efficiently in this regard. During the conversation, CEO Pichai assured Prime Minister Morawiecki that Google teams are working 24 hours a day in all critical areas - disinformation, cyber security, humanitarian affairs and providing access to verified information. Following decisions by several governments, including Poland, Google has blocked access to some Russian channels on YouTube in those countries.
In addition, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, together with the heads of government of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, sent a letter to the CEOs of companies that have an impact on our online security. They called for concrete action to combat disinformation. The recipients, apart from Google, are the CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
What can you do?
Remember that online safety also depends on you. Beware of flashy, highly emotional messages. Check sources before you share information. Look for news on big, trusted editorial and official government websites.
