Prime Minister spoke to Meta’s President about tackling disinformation
20.05.2022
The topic of the conversation between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Meta’s President Nick Clegg was the functioning of social media platforms in the modern world and their growing role in the dissemination of information. These issues take on particular importance in the face of the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The fight against disinformation and the spread of harmful content is becoming a priority.
Fight against disinformation
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss what has been done to date to combat disinformation and the spread of harmful content, as well as to assess the effectiveness of such activities. The interlocutors raised the issue of strengthening cooperation with external entities that verify the reliability of information around the world as well as with national public authorities.
In times of an ongoing information war, it is a challenge for both social network providers and public authorities to ensure access to reliable information for people using social networking services.
Appeal to representatives of digital companies
EU countries are aware that platforms such as Facebook can step up their efforts to combat disinformation. In March 2022, EU ministers responsible for digital and electronic communications issued a joint appeal to representatives of digital companies, in particular large online platforms, to take additional measures aimed at countering Russian disinformation online.
New technologies can also play a very positive role in reducing the impact of the refugee crisis by supporting civic organisations and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid.
