Prime Minister: to be effective on the battlefield, you need modern weapons and a strengthened army
19.03.2022
In the dynamically changing international situation - especially now after the Russian invasion of Ukraine - the security of the country, of Polish women and men, is becoming the number one priority for the government. The process of modernisation of the Polish army and expansion of its potential continues. Today, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the TELESYSTEM-MESKO Development and Implementation Centre in Lubiczów. The company specialises in research and development as well as production for the defence industry. “Security is the basis for the functioning of any society,” said the Prime Minister.
The Polish army must be well-armed
“We want to use the great potential of Polish engineers and research facilities such as this one,” said the Prime Minister during his visit to the TELESYSTEM-MESKO Development and Implementation Centre. “This plant manufactures modern weapons such as Piorun missiles, which can shoot down flying objects. This is Polish technological thought, Polish patents,” he continued.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the government has been allocating more and more funds for the modernisation of the army and that, in the coming quarters, it will be continued on an unprecedented scale. As he pointed out, Poland proposed at the European Council that defence spending be excluded from all EU regulations.
More troops and more money for defence
On 18 March 2022, the President signed the Homeland Defence Act. It is a response to the increasingly difficult geopolitical situation in the region. It provides for the strengthening of the Polish army – an increase in the number of soldiers, an increase in the defence budget, as well as technical modernisation of the army. The act also organises regulations concerning the Polish Armed Forces. One document contains regulations that were previously scattered across a dozen different acts.
The Homeland Defence Act will provide additional funding for the Armed Forces. From next year, there will be an increase in state expenditure on defence to at least 3 per cent of GDP. It also provides for the creation of a new funding source, that is the Armed Forces Support Fund. The mode of programming the development of the Armed Forces adopted in the act includes the determination of detailed directions for the reconstruction and modernisation of the Armed Forces for a 15-year planning period by the Council of Ministers, every 4 years, and introduction of a programme for the development of the Armed Forces by the Minister of National Defence on the basis of this document.
