UNHCR will commit to helping people fleeing the war

During the meeting, the High Commissioner announced that his office will commit to helping, including financially, refugees from Ukraine staying in Poland. Organisational and technical works are currently underway to launch UNHCR's support later this week.

With great admiration and appreciation, Filippo Grandi referred to the attitude of the Polish people, who so generously help refugees from Ukraine. He also noted the efficient and coordinated work of the government, regional and local authorities as well as border services in assisting refugees.

Poland as an intermediary for humanitarian aid

Our country has become a major humanitarian hub for the whole of Ukraine. Thanks to the Government Strategic Reserve Agency, lorries carrying aid for the inhabitants of the war-torn country cross the Polish-Ukrainian border. Poland receives aid from our allies abroad in the form of cargo and material goods for Ukraine.

Poland offers help to people fleeing the war

The great humanitarian operation for Ukraine involves both state and local authorities, as well as thousands of Poles. Poland provides the people who have crossed the border due to the war not only with humanitarian aid, but also with logistical, operational and financial assistance. Our compatriots are also offering their support. People of goodwill are helping their neighbours from across the eastern border not only materially, but are also offering them accommodation and care in their homes.

Near Lublin, there is a logistics hub for aid directed onto Ukrainian territory. In addition, Poland has simplified the border crossing procedure for truck transport of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This has made it easier for trucks to cross the Polish-Ukrainian border, and Ukraine will sooner receive the humanitarian aid that flows to it from Poland and the rest of the free world. These facilitations concern two border crossings, in Korczowa and Dorohusk. Simplified customs clearance is performed on the basis of a completed and submitted form.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees

The High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, as part of the United Nations, is authorised to lead and coordinate international efforts to protect refugees and resolve their problems around the world. The activities of his office also include ensuring the rights of refugees and assisting in granting asylum or repatriation.

Since 24 February, when Russian troops attacked Ukrainian territory, more than 1 million people have already arrived in Poland seeking refuge. These people can count on our support when crossing the Polish-Ukrainian border. In Poland, everyone can feel safe.
