80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau: memory and responsibility
27.01.2025
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau: a place which became a symbol of unimaginable human suffering and barbarity.
27 January 1945 serves as a reminder of the power of remembrance and of our common responsibility to prevent all forms of hate, antisemitism, and discrimination. Over 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, Poles, and the Roma, lost their lives at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, it is not only a mourning site, but also a warning that we may never let similar tragedies to be repeated.
The Polish state continuously strives to preserve the memory of the Holocaust victims and to protect remembrance sites. We collaborate with international partners in order to disseminate education about the Shoah, support historical research, and counter attempts to distort the historical truth.
On this special day, we pay homage to the Victims and the Survivors, whose testimonies constitute an irreplaceable source of truth and hope for the future.
