Commemoration of the Roma and Sinti Holocaust Remembrance Day

On Wednesday the 2nd of August 2023, the Head of the Foreign Service Arkady Rzegocki, represented the Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau, in the commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the liquidation of the so-called "Zigeunerlager" in the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp KL Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The Head of the Foreign Service, together with representatives of Roma communities and other invited guests, participated in the ceremonial passage from the entrance gate to the former "Zigeunerlager" to the Roma Holocaust Memorial, where he laid a commemorative wreath and paid tribute to the Roma and Sinti murdered as a result of the atrocities committed by the Third Reich.
Polish diplomacy consistently strives towards remembrance of Holocaust by the international community and cultivation of memory of all the victims of crimes committed by Nazi Germany and its allies.

In the evening of the 2nd of August 1944, the Germans exterminated the last 4,300 Roma - men, women and children - held in the so-called "Zigeunerlager" in KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. To commemorate over 500,000 victims of Porajmos, in 2011 the Sejm of the Republic of Poland established the 2nd of August as the Day of Remembrance of the Roma Holocaust. In 2015, the European Parliament established the 2nd of August as the European Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day.
