Consultations on EU multiannual budget
12.02.2020
Minister-Member of the Council of Ministers Konrad Szymański met with Austria’s Minister for the EU Karoline Edtstadler.
During the meeting the ministers discussed key items on the EU’s current agenda, including the Multiannual Financial Framework, migration, and the Conference on the Future of Europe.
The focus was on the MFF due to the upcoming extraordinary summit of the European Council, which is to discuss the EU budget for 2021-2027.
“Poland is in favour of an ambitious budget that is in line with political aspirations. We cannot do more for less,” stressed Minister Szymański. He added that when looking for ways to save money, we should above all significantly limit the increase, proposed by the Commission, for administration, defence or the Horizon Europe programme.
On the topic of migration, where Poland and Austria take a similar position on most points, Minister Szymański underlined that Poland is open to a discussion on migration issues that is led by the Croatian presidency of the Council of the EU. The key to efficient migration policy is a compromise of all member states based on the European Council conclusions of June 2018 and on a voluntary basis.
At the end of the meeting, the ministers talked about the Conference on the Future of Europe. Both politicians stressed that it is of utmost importance to ensure citizen participation in discussions on this topic.
