COVID-19 vaccines for Iran
21.10.2021
In response to Iran’s needs, Poland handed over 1 million COVID-19 vaccines. This donation is a token of vaccine solidarity with Iranians, with whom Poland has enjoyed centuries of good relations.
It is worth recalling that in 2020 we celebrated the 90th anniversary of Polish-Iranian Treaty of Friendship, and 2022 will mark the 80th anniversary of evacuation of General Władysław Anders’s army to Iran. It should also be noted that Iran provided help and shelter to 120,000 Poles evacuated from the Soviet Union during the Second World War. The group included both Gen. Władysław Anders’s soldiers and civilians. Today, Iran – like other Middle Eastern countries – is struggling with the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, and vaccination became an important measure to counter it and to support the people of Iran. Poland has sufficient stock of vaccines to cover domestic demand, which allows it to positively respond to requests from the countries in need. The vaccines were handed over on 16 October 2021 at the Teheran airport. Poland’s support for Iran in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic received publicity and warm welcome on site. The media coverage was provided by all major newspapers, news agencies and websites.
Besides the MFA, the project was co-organised by Ministry of Health and Government Agency for Strategic Reserves, which have been actively participating in the distribution of vaccines to foreign partners. Recently, the COVID-19 vaccines have been shipped to countries on many continents, such as Egypt, Vietnam, Taiwan, Kenya, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Australia, Norway and Kyrgyzstan.
