05.02.2021

“Poland is looking with hope at Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto’s mission to Ethiopia, starting next week, in relation to the conflict in the Tigray region,” underlined Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński in a telephone call with Elina Kalkku, Under-Secretary of State at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

During the call held at the initiative of the Polish MFA, Deputy Minister Jabłoński expressed our concern about the domestic and regional consequences of the Tigray conflict. He pointed out the key issues that Poland believes should be addressed during Minister Haavisto’s mission, on which he is going as an EU representative: ensuring unhindered access of humanitarian organisations to the alarmingly high number of people in need of urgent assistance; the obligation to protect civilians; allowing independent observers and media into Tigray; and prosecuting all cases of human rights violations.

He stressed the need for clear and solidarity-based actions within the EU, including putting further pressure on the authorities in Addis Ababa to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, as well as for explaining all cases of violence in an independent and reliable investigation.

Deputy Minister Elina Kalkku declared that all issues important to Poland have been taken into account during Minister Haavisto’s talks in Ethiopia, agreeing that protecting civilians and observing human rights and international humanitarian law by the conflict parties should be the most important issue right now. She added that these values are also of fundamental importance to Finland.
