Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński attends launch of 5th edition of Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme

“Good memories of the time spent in our country will encourage programme participants to become Poland’s informal ambassadors,” said deputy chief of Polish diplomacy during today’s event. Speaking to scholarship holders, Deputy Minister Jabłoński emphasised that Polish scholarship programmes share a common goal: encourage talented youth to come to Poland and study at its top universities. “I am convinced that it is an investment with a high return rate,” pointed out the deputy MFA head.

The inauguration of this year’s edition of the Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme featured a lecture titled “Diving with robots – interdisciplinary nature of contemporary science,” given by Dr Tomasz Łuczyński from the UK’s Heriot-Watt University.

Today’s event brought together nearly 100 of this year’s scholarship holders from Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia. The launch was also attended by over a dozen participants of the Poland My First Choice programme, a new scholarship scheme addressed to youth from developed countries. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education was represented by Secretary of State Wojciech Maksymowicz.

The Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme was established in 2015. It is co-financed by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the Polish development cooperation funds. It aims to foster the socio-economic growth of developing countries through improving the level of education and professional qualifications of their citizens. The programme grants free-of-charge studies at higher education institutions supervised by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education in the fields of engineering, technology, agriculture, exact and natural sciences. The scholarship programme is addressed in particular to students from Angola, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam. The most popular courses include biology, automation, electrical engineering, civil engineering, transport, Earth science and environmental studies, IT and telecommunications. Before starting their studies, the scholarship holders attend a one-year course prepared by the Polish Language and Culture Centres in Katowice, Lodz, Krakow and Siedlce. Nearly 500 students applied for the 2019/2020 edition of the Ignacy Łukasiewicz Programme – with most candidates coming from Indonesia, Nigeria and Ethiopia. Currently, a total of 215 students are enrolled on the Ignacy Łukasiewicz scholarship programme.
