The PSI is a voluntary, multilateral project initiated by Poland and the US in May 2003 in Kraków. It is aimed at strengthening the global counterproliferation architecture. The Initiative has now been joined by more than 100 countries. The meeting was an opportunity to take stock of the Initiative's 20 years of activity as well as to discuss the changing international security environment in the context of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and possible directions for the PSI's further development. A joint statement was an outcome of this debate.

On the sidelines of the PSI session, Deputy Minister Gerwel held a series of bilateral meetings. His talks with US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs Bonnie Jenkins covered security in the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine and Russia’s plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapon in Belarus.

During the meeting with Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Korea Kang Jae Kwon, Wojciech Gerwel referred to the current challenges to security and the need to deepen cooperation in this respect and in the field of economy. Bilateral issues and collaboration within multilateral formats dominated the discussion with Kazakhstan's First Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Kairat Umarov. At the meeting with the representative of Palau, Secretary of State Gustav Aitaro, the diplomats talked about cooperation within the UN system and possible Polish support for the reform of Palau's financial system.
