18.05.2021
“The sudden escalation of violence resulting in a dramatic humanitarian situation and civilian casualties calls for urgent diplomatic actions,” said Secretary of State Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk during Tuesday’s video conference of the EU foreign ministers on the escalation of violence in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
During an urgent virtual session, the ministers discussed the current situation.
Deputy Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk expressed Poland’s concern with the sudden escalation of violence in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. He underlined the dramatic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and numerous fatalities among civilians. The diplomat also stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself, yet its military operations in the Gaza Strip must be proportionate and comply with humanitarian law. Pointing out the unresolved root causes of current escalation, including the development of Jewish settlements and Palestinian violence, the deputy minister expressed his belief that the Israeli–Palestinian conflict needs to be solved based on dialogue between both sides, the concept of “two states for two nations” and internationally accepted parameters.
The deputy head of Polish diplomacy also noted that the EU should continue to exercise pressure on Israelis and Palestinians to renounce violence.
