EU imposes further sanctions aimed at combatting cyber-attacks
23.10.2020
On 22 October 2020, the Council of the EU introduced, for the second time in history, restrictive measures aimed at counteracting malicious cyber activity that threatens the European Union, its Member States, third countries, and international organizations.
The sanctions, which include a travel ban and an asset freeze, were imposed on two individuals and one entity that were responsible for or took part in the cyber-attack on the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) in April and May 2015.
The first EU sanctions for cyber-attacks were adopted in July 2020. Serving as an important instrument of the EU's cyber diplomacy toolbox, restrictive measures aim at protecting the EU security and interests, also beyond its borders. Sanctions against two GRU officers and the GRU’s military intelligence unit 26165 were also introduced by the UK.
