Today’s talks between top diplomats of Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Radosław Sikorski and Elmedin Konaković, were dominated by the Western Balkans’ European prospects and the security situation in Europe.
In particular, the ministers exchanged their views on the current international situation, including the results of the US presidential election. The head of the Polish MFA expressed support for European aspirations of both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entire Western Balkans. He congratulated the country on the opening of accession negotiations and hoped for further implementation of ambitious reforms. Minister Sikorski also confirmed the willingness to offer Polish administration’s expertise and experience which could back this process. He also reiterated that the enlargement policy will be one of the priorities of Poland’s presidency of the EU Council.
Security was another important topic on the agenda. Minister Radosław Sikorski stressed that Poland attaches great importance to the compliance of candidates’ foreign policy with the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy. “In the face of the Russian threat, we expect not just declarations but real action, including full compliance with EU sanctions,” he said. Poland’s chief diplomat pointed out that security challenges do not concern the Eastern neighbourhood only, but also the entire Western Balkans region, which is why Poland intends to maintain its military involvement by supporting the region’s stabilisation.
Speaking about Poland’s presidency of the EU Council, Minister Sikorski announced the continuation of intensive political dialogue with the Western Balkan countries. Following Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s visit to Belgrade and the meeting of the foreign ministers of Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, high-level meetings and visits are planned with the other countries of the region, that is North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania.
