17.03.2022
On 17 March, Poland’s Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro met with International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was represented by Secretary of State Piotr Wawrzyk.
The talks centred around the prospects and methods for the Office of the ICC Prosecutor to carry out in Poland an investigation into the war crimes, the crimes against humanity, and the crime of genocide perpetrated in Ukraine. The officials agreed on the crucial role of professional and swift conduct based on flexible cooperation between the parties. They also discussed the gathering and securing of criminal evidence and witness testimonies as well as the corresponding priority needs and ways to cooperate. Other issues related to the persecution of international crimes in Ukraine were touched upon too, including the parallel proceedings before the International Court of Justice and the developments in the Council of Europe.
The meeting concluded a three-day visit of delegates from the Office of the ICC Prosecutor to Poland, who were also at the Polish-Ukrainian border on 15 and 16 March to learn more about the situation on the ground where the majority of the prosecutor’s activities will be concentrated.
