Meeting of foreign ministers of Poland, Spain, and Romania in Valencia
23.05.2023
On 23 May, Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau took part in a trilateral summit of the chief diplomats of Poland, Spain, and Romania. The ministers met in Valencia at the invitation of the head of Spanish diplomacy.
The talks aimed at discussing the pivotal matters related to broadly conceived security and addressing important topics on the EU agenda a month before Spain takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Poland, Spain, and Romania are particularly responsible for maintaining security on the external borders of the European Union. The trilateral summit offered a comparative perspective on the situation in each of the three countries, giving way to an exploration of mutually acceptable solutions to help reinforce the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Union.
Poland has pursued highly successful bilateral cooperation with Spain and Romania alike, including in the area of security. Unanimous that the trilateral format of political consultations proved itself as an interesting platform for debate, the foreign ministers looked forward to its continuation. They noted the political value behind the format in the light of the upcoming Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the NATO Summit in Vilnius, and in the context of the crisis triggered by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which has posed a fundamental threat to European and global security.
