Meeting of heads of parliamentary foreign affairs committees of the Visegrad Group countries, Latvia and Estonia

06.10.2020

“The cooperation of the V4 countries with partners from the Baltic Sea region means that Central and Eastern European countries who share political and historical experiences speak with one voice at the EU forum. The today’s first meeting of heads of parliamentary foreign affairs committees of our countries proves mutual understanding and shows our will to forge close cooperation to foster growth in the Central and Eastern Europe region,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau during today’s videoconference of heads of parliamentary foreign affairs committees of the Visegrad Group countries, Latvia and Estonia. The meeting focused on Europe’s future.

The officials also discussed main challenges to the European integration, energy security, regional cooperation, including within the V4 + Latvia and Estonia format.
The completion of the single market for services, as well as defining rules of cooperation in the digital economy sector, the development of transport and energy connections in the Central and Eastern Europe are, in Minister Zbigniew Rau’s opinion, the most important tasks ahead of the EU and our region in the nearest future.  In this context, the chief of Polish diplomacy stressed the importance of the Three Seas Initiative. Furthermore, Minister Rau emphasised the need to reflect on long-term goals and threats to the European integration. A good opportunity to address such issues offers, for instance, the Conference on the Future of Europe. “The attractiveness of the European integration process stems from the ability to combine economic integration with social and cultural diversity, while maintaining a strong position of nation states,” highlighted Minister Rau.
Speaking of Eastern policy, the Polish top diplomat stressed that the EU needs to continue its efforts to strengthen the Eastern Partnership initiative.
Referring to the Polish presidency of the Visegrad Group, which Poland assumed on 1 July this year and which will end on 1 July 2021, Minister Rau emphasised Poland’s aspirations to develop cooperation between the Visegrad Group countries and their partners from the Baltic Sea region.
