MFA statement
11.02.2019
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to announce that on 11 February 2019, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry sent a note declaring Polish Consul in Norway Sławomir Kowalski to be persona non grata. The consul was given one week to leave Norway.
The Ministry is satisfied with Consul Sławomir Kowalski's work, especially with regard to his commitment to defending the interests of Polish families. We reaffirm that the Norwegian side's allegations against the Polish consul’s activities are unfounded. It should also be pointed out that the Norwegian authorities issued their decision despite the fact that the Polish side has shown good will, a willingness to explain the situation in a constructive manner and to clear any doubts, and in spite of a fact-based and substantive approach to the allegations made against Consul Kowalski.
In this situation, acting on the principle of reciprocity and in line with international custom, the Polish authorities decided to recognise a member of the diplomatic staff of the Norwegian Embassy in Warsaw who performs consular duties as an unwelcome person. The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway was informed about this decision on 11 February 2019.
