MFA statement on persecution of free media in Belarus

21.05.2021

Since many months independent media outlets in Belarus have been continuously suppressed. Repression against journalists, who strive to do their job legitimately, is prevailing.

MFA STATEMENT

The detentions at the office of TUT.BY news website and at the recording studio of Bielsat TV in recent days are further examples of actions to curtail freedom of expression and the right to information.

Both the European Union and the community of democratic countries have repeatedly called upon Belarus to choose the path of democracy, and to cease the persecution of journalists. Today, we are again appealing to the Belarusian authorities. A constructive dialogue and respecting fundamental rights are the most appropriate means to reach an accord in Belarus.
