MFA Statement on Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem

20.01.2022

Statement MFA

Poland is deeply concerned about an increasing trend in demolitions and evictions, such as events in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem on 19 January 2022, where the Palestinian family's home was demolished by the Israeli authorities. We are also concerned about decision made by the Jerusalem District Committee for Planning and Building to advance a plan for the construction of more than 1,450 settlement-housing units between Har Homa and Givat Hamatos. This is worrying and may lead to another escalation of the conflict.

We firmly oppose any unilateral actions which exacerbate the current tensions and undermine the prospect of a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Settlement expansion, demolitions and evictions are illegal under international law.

We call upon both sides to resume a constructive dialogue aimed at resolving the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, in line with the internationally agreed parameters.
