MFA statement on the decision by the authorities of the Russian Federation to consider a Polish diplomat as a persona non grata
05.02.2021
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland has learned with concern about the decision by the authorities of the Russian Federation to consider a Polish diplomat working at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Saint Petersburg as a persona non grata.
The reason for this action given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation referred to her alleged participation in the demonstrations against corruption in the Russian Federation and in support to Alexei Navalny. This decision was communicated at the time that the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell was paying an official visit to Moscow.
By means of response to this gesture the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland called the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, and informed him that the Polish diplomat in question performed her duties resulting from the diplomatic status in accordance with the Vienna Convention. Poland expects that Russian authorities reverse their wrongful decision. Otherwise, Poland reserves to itself the possibility of taking adequate measures.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland expresses its regret in view of this decision taken by the Russian Federation which will contribute to the further deepening of the crisis in the bilateral relations between our countries.
