Poland welcomes the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly suspending Russia’s membership of the UN Human Rights Council.

Adopted today, the UN General Assembly resolution suspends the Russian Federation’s rights of membership of the UN Human Rights Council in connection with gross and systematic violations of human rights committed by the country during its aggression against Ukraine. It is the second time in the council’s history that a country sitting on the Human Rights Council has been suspended.

Poland – also a member of the UN Human Rights Council – sought to have Russia suspended since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine in February this year. The scope of violations of the international humanitarian law and human rights by the Russian side during the aggression against Ukraine cannot be reconciled with Russia’s active membership of the Human Rights Council, and its further membership would undermine the credibility of the United Nations human rights protection system.
