“President Andrzej Duda’s Washington visit demonstrates the close partnership between Poland and the US. Today, our relations focus on key matters such as defence, security, and energy,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz opening a debate organised in collaboration with the Warsaw office of the German Marshall Fund. Participants of the videoconference The Future of Transatlantic Relations in a Post-COVID World discussed the implications of the global crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, possible remedial actions, as well as the future of the transatlantic relationship in a new, post-pandemic reality.
“In today’s circumstances, the transatlantic community should show unity and solidarity, face threats together and plan action together to recover from the crisis”, said the chief of Polish diplomacy. He stressed that for Poland the security and prosperity of Europeans will invariably be founded on the American presence in Europe and strong transatlantic ties. This is also furthered by the development of Polish-American military cooperation and the implementation of the declaration signed by the Polish and US presidents in 2019. The chief of Polish diplomacy mentioned as important the close cooperation between Poland and the US on its LNG supplies and civilian nuclear energy, as well as G5. According to the minister, the development of the Three Seas Initiative will give a strong impetus for strengthening the US involvement in Europe.
The conference brought together representatives of administrations and think-tanks from the US, Germany, France, and the UK.
The German Marshall Fund (GMF) is one of the leading American think-tanks, with offices in Berlin and Warsaw. The GMF’s Warsaw office focuses on transatlantic cooperation, in particular in security and defence, energy security, and the promotion of democracy in Eastern Partnership countries. Taking place every year in June in Warsaw, the project is the result of partnership between the German Marshall Fund and the MFA Department of Foreign Policy Strategy.
