06.03.2020
On 5-6 March 2020 in Zagreb Minister Jacek Czaputowicz participated in an informal meeting of EU heads of diplomacy in the Gymnich formula, combined with an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
The main points on the agenda of the informal Gymnich meeting was the state of relations with Russia and Turkey. Minister Czaputowicz underlined the necessity to preserve the unity and consistency of the EU’s policy towards Russia in the light of Russia’s actions that are contrary to international law. The chief of Polish diplomacy noted that the appropriate signal from the EU to Russia lies in maintaining the rules agreed on in 2016 and continuing sanctions policy. The EU should also strengthen its commitment in promoting human rights in Russia.
With reference to Turkey, Minister Czaputowicz pointed out that the country is an important EU partner and a NATO ally. Continuing cooperation with Turkey is of key significance for the EU security, regardless of the situations when the EU has to take actions in defence of its interests.
The talks at the extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council meeting focused on recent developments in Syria. The ministers agreed on the text of a joint statement in which they expressed their hope for a permanent ceasefire, called for the provision of humanitarian aid to civilians in Idlib, and confirmed solidarity with Greece in the light of the crisis situation on the Greek-Turkish border.
