Minister Jacek Czaputowicz visits Brussels

“The current situation surrounding the nuclear deal with Iran is alarming,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz during yesterday’s Foreign Affairs Council (FAC). The Polish chief of diplomacy stressed that the international community must be ready to engage in a possible discussion on the deal which would include all stakeholders, among them Iran, the United States, and the European Union.

When discussing Iran, the EU foreign ministers agreed that the situation in the Persian Gulf needs to be urgently de-escalated and that Iran needs to meet its commitments arising from the JCPOA. In Minister Czaputowicz’s opinion, recent developments in the region pose a threat also to sea and air traffic and to energy supplies.

During the Council meeting, Minister Czaputowicz shared with the EU foreign ministers his insights on the situation in Moldova, where he met with the country’s top authorities a few days ago.

“[Moldova’s] top priorities in the near future are tackling corruption, de-oligarchization, reform of the judiciary and public prosecutor’s office, reviving the economy, support for small and medium-sized businesses and attracting foreign investments,” reported Minister Czaputowicz. He also urged the EU to lend Moldova’s new government strong support. “We could create a support group for Moldova, similar to assistance provided to Ukraine in 2014,” said Poland’s top diplomat. He suggested that this could help the European Union to better understand the processes going on in this country, and would guarantee the proper use of the support granted.  

During the discussion on migration in the Mediterranean, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz emphasized the need to combat organized terrorist groups dealing with illegal migration and to avoid actions that could encourage illegal migrants to undertake risky attempts to make their way to the EU. “It is vital to enhance protection of the EU’s external borders and to ensure proper financial measures to improve the situation in the countries of origin of illegal migrants,” said Minister Czaputowicz.  

Minister Czaputowicz also briefed the Foreign Affairs Council on the results of the Western Balkans Summit, which was held in Poznan on 4-5 July 2019. “The Summit allowed us to sustain the intensity of the European perspective for this region, despite unfavourable decisions concerning Albania and North Macedonia, which were taken in June,” said  Minister Czaputowicz. He also underscored the need to open accession negotiations with these countries in autumn 2019, recalling that the European perspective remains the strongest reform incentive.

On the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council, Foreign Minister Czaputowicz met with his Irish counterpart Simon Coveney, with whom he talked about the current state of Brexit.
