The main goal of Polish foreign minister’s visit to Qatar was participation in the Doha Forum 2019.
The regional conference Doha Forum, launched in 2000, is a platform for global dialogue bringing together leaders from the world of politics and business. It seeks to find solutions to the most pressing challenges that the international community faces today. The theme of this year’s edition is Reimagining Governance in a Multipolar World.
During the session “A Stronger Role for Europe in the International Arena – What Would It Take?”, Minister Czaputowicz talked with politicians and experts about the future of Europe in the context of challenges such as Brexit, European Green Deal and EU enlargement. “Brexit will have a great impact on the EU,” said the head of Polish diplomacy, recalling Great Britain’s strong position in Europe and in the world. He also expressed his conviction that the European Union will have to establish new principles of cooperation with Great Britain after it leaves the Community.
In Doha, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz also met with representatives of Qatar’s highest authorities – Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and the Emir’s advisor for national security Mohammed Bin Ahmem Al-Mesned. “Poland considers Qatar as one of its key partners in the region with a strong leverage on security architecture in this part of the world,” emphasized the Polish foreign minister while expressing his readiness to intensify bilateral cooperation. He said: “We are interested in developing relations with the State of Qatar in many dimensions. Most of all, we would like to keep the intense level of our economic cooperation.” He also mentioned Qatar’s important role as LNG gas provider for Poland.
Minister Czaputowicz thanked his interlocutors for Qatar’s participation in the Warsaw Middle East Conference and encouraged them to take further active part in the Warsaw Process. “We believe that we will be able to reach agreement on the actions to improve security situation in the Middle East and in the long run develop a positive and constructive vision of the region’s future,” said the Polish foreign minister.
On the sidelines of the Forum, Minister Czaputowicz met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. They discussed the situation in the Middle Eastern region, among other topics. The Polish top diplomat informed his Iranian counterpart about the current state of working groups’ arrangements in the framework of the Warsaw Process.
In Doha, Minister Czaputowicz also met with members of the local Polish community. He thanked them for their exceptional contribution to Qatar’s economic and social development and for creating a positive image of Poland abroad.
