“We care about the future of the EU. Europe will not overcome its problems without the agreement of Warsaw, Paris and Berlin. We need agreement on the budget, climate and geopolitical role of the EU,” said Minister Konrad Szymański during the meeting in Lens, France.
The summit was hosted by French Minister of European Affairs Amelie de Montchalin. German side was represented by the Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth. The participants discussed the key points on the European agenda including new institutional cycle, EU enlargement and the Eastern Partnership, multiannual financial framework, energy and climate issues, and the social agenda in Europe. Other subjects included internal market, industrial policy and the policy of competition. The ministers also talked about the future cooperation in the Weimar Triangle format.
The meeting was held at a crucial moment for the EU, as common positions are being set for the climate and budget negotiations. The interlocutors drafted a declaration where they address these issues. According to the position taken in the document, the primary goal of the Weimar Triangle states is to draw the EU closer to its citizens. “Our countries share the commitment to fight the climate change. Moreover, we agree that next Multiannual Financial Frameworks should considerably contribute to the fight, in particular by the proper formulation of climate goals and additional support for the fair transition of EU towards climate neutrality in 2050 which takes into consideration the needs and specific conditions on the regional and national level,” said Minister Szymański.
Previous meeting of the ministers of European affairs of the Weimar Triangle was held in June 2016 in Warsaw.
