Today’s talks between ministers Radosław Sikorski and José Manuel Albares focused on bilateral relations, the priorities of the Polish presidency of the EU Council, support for Ukraine in its defence, and cooperation with the new US administration.
The chiefs of diplomacy stressed that their countries’ bilateral ties would be further boosted and become more strategic in nature if intergovernmental consultations could take place soon, previously put on hold due to a busy electoral schedule.
Poland’s top diplomat outlined the priorities of the Polish presidency to his Spanish counterpart, underlining the importance of tight cooperation with Spain, recently reflected most of all in regular consultations among the Big Five European Union member states and the United Kingdom.
Minister Sikorski acknowledged Spain’s continued support for Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s armed invasion. He highlighted that it is manifested not only by sending humanitarian aid and military support for the Ukrainian government and army, but also by providing shelter for Ukrainian war refugees in Spain. Poland’s chief diplomat also referred to the Spanish financial contribution of EUR 1.5 million allocated to creating the Lviv Culture Hub, officially inaugurated yesterday in Minister Albares’s presence.
The chiefs of diplomacy discussed the challenges related to collaborating with President Trump’s new administration, while affirming that transatlantic bonds and a united NATO are at the same time beneficial to our American partners. They also reviewed the situation in the Middle East, a key region for the European Union due to its significance and geographic proximity.
