During the meeting, the EU foreign ministers focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. The ministers also held an informal discussion with President of the European Investment Bank Nadia Calviño.
Minister Radosław Sikorski stressed the need to continue supplies of military equipment for Ukraine and lift restrictions in its use. He noted that the current transfers of air defence systems make a strategic difference in this regard and enduring support is critical for Ukraine’s efforts to hold their positions at the frontlines. Poland’s top diplomat also welcomed the arrangements made during the NATO summit on this issue. He also underlined the key importance of supplying energy to Ukraine, as the lack thereof will result in a humanitarian disaster and a further influx of Ukrainian refugees. Moreover, he noted that all peace initiatives must be consulted with Ukraine. Poland opposes any attempts to make an impression that the EU is serious about Russia’s “peace proposals”. Minister Sikorski stressed that the EU’s strength is in its unity, observance of international law, and readiness to defend it.
During today’s session, its participants also discussed the developments in the Gaza Strip, including resuming ceasefire negotiations held in Qatar. The idea of holding a high-level meeting with Arab partners as well as with the US and the UN garnered support. Further dialogue on post-conflict measures is needed. It was noted with serious concern that the security situation at the Israeli–Lebanese border has deteriorated.
During an informal discussion with President of the European Investment Bank Nadia Calviño, the Council noted with satisfaction that the financing of EU defence industries was among the EIB's strategic priorities and underlined that support for Ukraine should remain a priority for the Bank.
The chief of Polish diplomacy called for enhancing strategic communications in the US regarding the transatlantic relations and the EU’s engagement to support Ukraine.
