Minister Radosław Sikorski’s phone calls with foreign ministers of Finland, Denmark and Türkiye
28.12.2023
As part of a series of consultations with his counterparts, Poland's top diplomat talked today with ministers of Finland—Elina Valtonen, Denmark—Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and Türkiye—Hakan Fidan.
In the phone conversation with Finland's minister Elina Valtonen, the need to develop NATO's capability and the EU's resilience to the modern security threats was particularly strongly accentuated. Another important topic was border protection, which has posed a challenge to Poland for many months and has also proved a serious problem at Finland's eastern border over the last weeks. It was jointly noted that Poland and Finland acknowledge the potential of cooperation to keep up the support for Ukraine. Given Finland's accession to NATO in April 2023, the officials welcomed the perspective of enhanced relations within the Alliance, both bilaterally and regionally.
During minister Sikorski's talk with Türkiye's foreign minister, the diplomats were satisfied with the very good state of Polish-Turkish relations and the commitment to building a partnership-based dialogue. Radosław Sikorski and Hakan Fidan both noted how important it is that Poland and Türkiye collaborate in the fields of security, economic cooperation and response to global challenges. They also expressed their conviction that Warsaw and Ankara have a shared concern for the future of the North Atlantic Treaty. The state of the EU-Türkiye relations was also on the agenda. Minister Sikorski underlined Poland's unwavering support for the European perspective for Türkiye.
The consultations with Denmark's foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed mutual openness to close cooperation, both bilaterally and within regional and international organisations. Poland and Denmark attach particular importance to cooperation in the security sector, which has become strategic in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The multi-faceted support for Ukraine remains one of the most pressing challenges in the near future, including in terms of military equipment and post-war reconstruction. Ministers Sikorski and Rasmussen reaffirmed the willingness to soon hold bilateral talks and expressed their belief that the scheduled visit of Denmark's Crown Prince Couple to Poland will bring the two countries even closer together.
