Minister Rau meets with Saudi Arabian foreign minister

“The purpose of the Minister’s visit to Poland and of our talks is to strengthen bilateral cooperation in its political, economic and military dimensions,” stressed Minister Rau during a meeting with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, who is on a visit to Poland. The visit takes place in a year marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Polish-Saudi diplomatic relations, during the Saudi presidency of the G20, and is part of the growing intensity of Poland’s relations with Arab countries (including Persian Gulf states).

While in Warsaw, Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud also held talks with President Andrzej Duda, Speaker of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek, and Speaker of the Senate Tomasz Grodzki.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been our most important trading partner in the Middle East for more than a decade. Our bilateral trade hit a record high in 2019, 2.7 billion dollars,” said Minister Zbigniew Rau. The development of political, economic, military, and legal and treaty cooperation, cooperation at multilateral forums, and current international issues, in particular security and recent developments in the Middle East, were the main topics of talks between the Polish and Saudi foreign ministers.

They are held alternately in the capitals of Saudi Arabia and Poland at the level of foreign ministers, on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding of 9 May 2007 on bilateral political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“We treat Saudi Arabia as a strategically important partner in the Gulf and Middle East region. Since 1995, when we established diplomatic relations, both our countries have maintained friendly relations,” the chief of Polish diplomacy emphasised during the meetings.
